satellite cell phone

Noting the recent boom in the cellular market, and the connectivity potential of the, it is own natural that the two should go through a marriage in which their respective technologies are morphed into one handheld device capable of working anywhere on the globe, be it land, sea or air.

Satellite cellular phones provide the global reach of a satellite phone, with the local, handheld/lightweight convenience of a cellular phone. In fact, satellite cell phones are more or less indistinguishable from commonly used cellular phones. These combination phones are either represented as dual or tri-mode phones, in that they are functional outside a standard GSM / satellite / GPS network. The beauty of satellite cell phones is that they function across GSM / satellite networks automatically. That is to say, they will function as a cellular phone until a cellular network can no longer be detected. At that point, they will morph to become satellite capable.

As noted above, it is now possible to get up to three modes (tri-mode) in a single, lightweight handset. The three modes are as follows:

  • GSM: Allows for roaming from one cell phone network to another.
  • Satellite: Provides the user with complete, global coverage whether at sea or mid-air.
  • GPS: Allows users to receive information based on their precise location in the form of latitude/longitude for navigational purposes, driving directions and description of surroundings.

How do I know if a satellite cell phone is right for me? If you're looking for the convenience and security that comes with having available communications at all times, regardless of where you are in the world, then a satellite cellular phone is right for you.
